What is texture?In particular in paintings?

texture is usually how something feels, rough or smooth, etc. in a painting, its pretty much the same thing, except you dont have to touch it to know what it feels like. some paintings look smooth, others look bumpy or rough, this is the texture. different maints and materials give different texture, but sometimes, in a painting something looks rough, when in actual fact its just 2d and flat.
