The old professor says: Gneiss is a metamorphosed granite in which the mineral grains have been flattened to a foliate or leaf-like structure. They often appear as bands across the rock. Texture is one of the key identifiers for petrologists in the identification of rock. Commonly the bands or micaceous looking fragments will be black, white, or pink.
