Texture on canvas art?

I am trying to add texture to my canvas art work...I have seen it done but do not know what to use...is it joint compound, grout or what??Texture on canvas art?

Go to your local art store and get some supplies like rough oddly shaped sponges or some old rags, they make good texture. Just dab little by little as lightly as you can and not too hard all at once. It's better to get a little bit and change it how you want then pressing hard and ruining it and starting all over.
